A Monumental Step Forward for the Health and Well-Being of the People of Bougainville 27 Nov 24

A historic milestone has been achieved recently as the Bougainville Healthy Communities Programme (BHCP) officially launches a transformative partnership with the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) Department of Health. This momentous occasion was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), setting the stage for a new era of health and well-being for the people of Bougainville.

At the heart of this groundbreaking collaboration is a shared vision of improving the lives of Bougainville’s people. The BHCP is dedicated to empowering communities to take control of their health, reinforcing health systems, and addressing key health challenges across the region. This new programme aims to foster long-term sustainable health solutions while delivering short- and medium-term outcomes, including increasing community awareness of preventative health practices, establishing effective referral pathways for health and social issues, and enhancing communication systems for improved health promotion.

The MoU signed reflects the commitment of all parties involved to the health and prosperity of Bougainville’s citizens. With the guidance and leadership of the ABG Department of Health, this partnership promises to ensure that every step taken will directly benefit the health of Bougainville’s people. The ABG’s strong dedication to empowering its citizens through healthcare is evident, with the Department of Health playing a pivotal role in overseeing the integration of this programme into the national health system.

As part of this collaboration, an Advisory Group will be established to provide ongoing oversight and strategic direction. This group will comprise representatives from the ABG Department of Health, The Leprosy Mission New Zealand, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade New Zealand, and other key stakeholders. Their collective efforts will ensure the programme remains on course, monitoring progress, and driving meaningful impact for the people of Bougainville.

“This MoU is not just a document – it is a bold declaration of our shared commitment to shaping a healthier, more prosperous future for Bougainville. With the dedication and leadership of the ABG Department of Health, alongside the expertise and support of The Leprosy Mission New Zealand (LMNZ) and the New Zealand government, this programme will leave a legacy of improved health, empowerment, and resilience for generations to come, says Jasleen Kleer, International Programmes Manager (LMNZ)
