Partnering with the NZ Aid Programme, the Leprosy Mission NZ started a new project in Papua New Guinea in March 2024.
In the picturesque Gemo Community, nestled between gentle hills and the sparkling sea, residents rely on rainwater and local creeks for their daily water needs. Unfortunately, climate change is taking a toll on this vibrant community. Heavy rains pollute their creeks, roads are crumbling, and rising temperatures diminish the nutrients in their soil, threatening their food crops.
Enter Kila Thompson, an energetic elder with a vision. For the past three years, Kila has been nurturing a remarkable plant called Vetiver grass in his backyard. When The Leprosy Mission PNG staff visited to discuss climate adaptation strategies, Kila eagerly joined the climate change committee, ready to make a difference.
During training sessions, Kila became a passionate advocate for sustainable practices. He introduced Vetiver grass to his fellow community members, highlighting its many benefits: it prevents soil erosion, filters water, purifies the air, and enriches the soil with nutrients. Curious neighbors soon visited Kila’s garden, where they were amazed to see the vibrant growth of Vetiver grass alongside his betel nut and coconut trees. The difference was clear—Kila’s trees yielded larger and healthier nuts, and his outdoor pit latrine had no unpleasant odor.
Kila’s success story is not just about one man’s efforts; it symbolizes hope and resilience for the entire community. By embracing sustainable practices, Kila has inspired others to adapt to the changing climate and improve their livelihoods. This is especially vital for vulnerable members of the community, including those living with leprosy, who often face additional challenges in accessing clean water and nutritious food.
Kila’s journey shows how improving the environment can uplift those in poverty, creating a healthier, more sustainable future for everyone. In Gemo Community, climate change is no longer an overwhelming threat; it is a challenge that can be met with innovative solutions and community spirit.
