In the remote Ipaipana Community, just a few kilometers from the sea in the Kairuku District of Central Province, residents primarily rely on growing and selling betelnut for their income. However, they have faced challenges due to climate change, which has led to declining soil nutrients and reduced crop yields
Recently, community members participated in a two-day training on climate change. They learned about its various effects and realized their community was already feeling the impacts. Inspired to take action, they recognized the urgent need to adapt and become more resilient.
One of the first steps they took was addressing the decline in soil nutrients. After the training, the Climate Change Committee mobilized volunteers to dig waste disposal pits. This initiative aimed to separate non-biodegradable waste from biodegradable waste. The biodegradable waste would be composted and used to enrich their garden soil, helping to improve crop yields.
