In 2023, 1,500 village health volunteers were trained in the PNG Health Department through the PHACE programme.
In the rugged and remote regions of Papua New Guinea, Harriet has been serving as a Community Health Volunteer for just a year, yet her contributions are already making a profound difference.
Her dedication is transforming lives as she educates families about essential health and hygiene practices. From the importance of hand washing to techniques for maintaining overall wellness, Harriet’s work is paving the way for healthier communities.
Despite these advances, major diseases still plague this area. Tuberculosis (TB), malaria, and the relentless search to find and treat every last hidden case of leprosy are ongoing battles.
Thanks to the unwavering financial support from New Zealanders, dedicated volunteers like Harriet are able to navigate the challenging roads of PNG, uncovering new cases of leprosy and delivering hope and healing to those in need.
The threat of leprosy persists, particularly in the most remote communities and overcrowded city settlements. These areas face significant health challenges, and without ongoing efforts, the fight against leprosy cannot be won.
