"I am amazed by how planes fly, and I want to become a pilot when I grow up."
A mother’s heart breaks for her son, teased and bullied for his scarred face. In PNG, leprosy is destroying young lives like Charlie’s.
It is incredibly difficult for a parent to hear the dreaded diagnosis of leprosy for their child. “Your son has leprosy” comes as a crushing blow on top of all their other burdens in life.
Rachael, Charlie’s mother, faced numerous hardships in Papua New Guinea. Living in a village built on stilts over filthy water, with no land for healthy food, their lives were already fraught with challenges including diabetes, tuberculosis, and now leprosy. On top of this, Charlie’s little sister, seriously disabled, needed constant care and attention.
When Rachael heard “leprosy,” it shattered her. Among the world’s most disadvantaged, leprosy remains deadly and feared, keeping many from seeking help. For every child like Charlie cured, our research suggests five more cases hide in the shadows.
Charlie’s journey worsened despite his mother’s efforts. Teased and bullied, he withdrew, even from school and his beloved football, as leprosy's effects stole his dreams of becoming a pilot...
But with your support, Charlie received vital care. His mother, initially devastated, embraced his treatment plan, ensuring every medication dose was taken.
Supported by volunteers, he looks forward to returning to school and pursuing his dreams.
Your support reaches beyond medicine; it fosters hope and recovery for children like Charlie. Messages of encouragement, like Iris’ drawing, brighten their spirits. Your generosity trains health volunteers, uncovering hidden cases and aiding communities to end leprosy’s grip.
Thank you for transforming lives like Charlie’s. Together, we empower families, restore dreams, and inspire hope where it’s needed most.
