Partnering with the NZ Aid Programme, the Leprosy Mission NZ started a new project in Papua New Guinea in March 2024.
The goal of this project is to increase community resilience to climate vulnerability and change:
The communities will have reduced vulnerability to the impacts of climate change through the interventions of the programme as the programme will focus on building resilience in the communities to impacts of climate change through a range of climate change activities.
These activities will bring positive environmental impacts. Through mangrove planting and preservation, carbon is captured and stored, making it extremely valuable in the fight against climate change.
Moreover, mangroves provide a habitat for fish, crabs, shellfish, birds, and reptiles supporting biodiversity. Mangroves also provide a natural defence against storm surges, coastal erosion, and flooding.
With agricultural training packages delivered at the community level, the programme will build the capacity of farmers on climate-resilient farming techniques and promote crop rotation farming methods.
