We're thrilled to share an inspiring update from Nepal: 16-year-old Shakti can stand and walk again!
Shakti has been at the heart of our Appeal for the Nepal Research Centre. Her journey with leprosy began at just two years old, with the disease spreading unchecked throughout her childhood. She lost sensation in the soles of her feet, leading to superficial cuts that turned into deep ulcers. The infection in her lower leg became so severe that doctors at Anandaban Leprosy Hospital had to amputate below her knee to save her life.
Shakti's future seemed uncertain. Yet, thanks to your unwavering support, she has returned to Anandaban and received a life-changing gift: a beautiful new prosthetic leg. Shakti is filled with gratitude and excitement.
Your compassion for people affected by leprosy has given this young girl a fresh start in life. The new research centre planned for Anandaban will bring hope to many more individuals like Shakti.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for making such a profound difference in Shakti's life and the lives of many others.
At Anandaban Hospital, staff make prosthetics, protective footwear and mobility aids. These are crucial to prevent further disability and enable people affected by leprosy like Shakti to regain their independence and dignity to help them walk again.
