Antonio's journey with leprosy began with numb patches on his skin—an unfamiliar and frightening experience.
"I didn’t understand what this illness was. I didn’t know that treatment was available," he recalls. Fortunately, through the Leprosy Mission Timor Leste's economic development projects, Antonio found hope and support.
Joining a self-help group, Antonio forged friendships with others affected by leprosy, finding a community that understood his struggles. With a small loan, he invested in a pig that soon multiplied into eight piglets. Selling them enabled him to provide for his children's education and improve his family's nutrition.
"I am now motivated to stop leprosy from affecting people so they can enjoy their life without fear—like I did," Antonio affirms.
His story exemplifies the transformative impact of empowerment and community support in overcoming the challenges posed by leprosy.
Through initiatives like those of the Leprosy Mission, individuals like Antonio not only receive treatment, but also gain opportunities to rebuild their lives with dignity and resilience.
