Improving Fresh Water Access in Papua New Guinea Schools and Communities
In Papua New Guinea, access to fresh water remains a significant challenge, particularly in the coastal areas of the Central Province. St. Margaret’s Catholic Primary and Elementary School in Boroko, located in this region, has faced ongoing difficulties due to the scarcity of clean water. The community struggles with long dry spells, making it incredibly hard to secure fresh water for daily use.
The Leprosy Mission New Zealand (LMNZ), in partnership with a local organisation, has been instrumental in providing technical support to address the freshwater challenges in Papua New Guinea. Known for its expertise in the development sector, the local partner has long been a trusted entity in delivering Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programs, as well as climate mitigation initiatives. Together, LMNZ and their partner have worked to implement vital water systems in communities facing significant access issues, ensuring that clean and safe water is available where it’s needed most.
At St. Margaret’s School, the installation of a borehole and water tank system has already made a remarkable difference. This freshwater access has not only benefited the students and teachers but also the wider community, particularly individuals with disabilities or those living with leprosy. Before the new water system, students often had to walk long distances to fetch water, which took time away from their education. Many students were forced to attend only half of their classes as they spent hours daily collecting water from distant rivers.
Now, with easy access to fresh water from the newly installed facilities, students can fill their containers and bring water directly to their classrooms. This has improved students' ability to stay hydrated, attend classes regularly, and maintain better hygiene by washing their hands. The increase in water availability has also reduced the risk of waterborne diseases, keeping both students and staff healthier.
The positive impact of this freshwater system extends beyond the school itself. Local community members no longer need to spend hours boiling or purifying water from unsafe sources. Instead, they have access to clean water, which has significantly improved their quality of life. LMNZ has heard from teachers, students, and the community about the transformation this new water system has brought to their daily routines.
This sustainable water solution has proven to be effective, and there is potential to replicate it in other villages across the region. By improving access to clean water, we are not only enhancing the lives of students and teachers but also fostering a healthier, more resilient community.
