Help families in Timor-Leste throw off leprosy

before the weight becomes unbearable. 

When leprosy began twisting and numbing Tinio’s hands and feet, he thought it was a curse. 

In fear and panic, he turned to traditional healers, who took everything from him, except his leprosy. The disease would not stop. It has now disabled him so badly that he can no longer provide for his family. He has lost his fingers, his toes, and with them, the dignity of being their breadwinner. 

Tinio carries a heavy sense of shame as he says, “I can’t support my family.” He cannot even collect water from the local community pump, which operates just one or two days a week.

It’s a horrible situation. With no livelihood, scarce water, no hygiene, not even a toilet, and not enough food, no wonder the family is chronically ill.

The lives of this family have been utterly crushed by the weight of leprosy.

There's a major problem in Timor-Leste: Dili is one of the few places where leprosy testing is available, yet for people at most risk, the cost of travel makes it challenging to reach. 

With your support, though, the PHACE (Preventative Health and Community Empowerment)  programme will be able to provide transportation, family support, and follow-up on cases of leprosy. 

Your gift, multiplied 4X, will help PHACE find and cure people with leprosy. You will help teach people how to protect themselves from the disease.

You will also help give people the strongest defence against leprosy: better health, hygiene, and nutrition. This is one of the most effective ways to wipe out transmission of the disease for good.
