Following the earthquake in Myanmar on 28 March, there have also been aftershocks across the country, including a further earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1.
Life in Myanmar was already difficult because of the ongoing civil war, recent flooding and huge hikes in food and transportation costs. Now the high temperatures of around 40C are adding to the challenges of finding food and clean water. On top of this, the monsoons are expected to arrive in two weeks.
Myanmar Leprosy Mission Country Leader, Dr Zaw Moe Aung spoke to Claire Amos on Radio NZ from Yangon. He told her “The situation is being made worse by the very hot temperatures - over 40 degrees, 12-30 million people were in need of help prior to the earthquake. People are very scared and are sleeping outside, and they desperately need more body bags, more blood transfusions and medical kits…the need is enormous. “
Here’s how your urgent donation could save lives today.
We need your prayers and help to continue our mission in Myanmar.
